This diorama depicts the mission called “ The ALAMO” close to San Antonio, Texas on that fateful day in 1836 when the resolve of the Texicans to declare their freedom was severely challenged by General de Santa Anna and his Mexican Host. A group of determined Americans numbering about 200 held the old Mission against an army of thousands . These brave defenders were commanded by a famous trio of personages known to every schoolboy in America: The intrepid Davy Crockett, the irascible Jim Bowie and the fiery William Barrett Travis leading a ragtag bunch of patriots to everlasting glory and creating an indelible memory of heroism for this great nation. This is sacred ground! There are 18 cannons (four of which had no initial crews) with 45 artillery servers, infantrymen firing “Kentucky/Tennessee rifles,” various muskets and shotguns (“over & under as well as the side-by-side”) double-barrelled models plus a bevy of pistols for a total of 155 men assisting the 45 artillerymen in defending the walls. A Doctor and several civilians (two women and a child) plus Travis’ negro servant Jim round out the force holding THE ALAMO.
There are 685 Mexicans wearing French Napoleonic uniforms depicting the assault including Grenaderos, Cazedores, Zapadores and five identified battalions of Fusiliers as well as Pioneers, Sappers, Ladder Carriers and Ladder climbers. There are even a small number of artillerymen (if ALAMO guns are captured and turned upon the defenders) as well as colorful Command Groups and mounted Personalities commanding the five attacking columns. The majority of them are equipped with English“Brown Bess” and French “Charleville” muskets. The Cazedores (Light Infantry) are supplied with British “Baker” rifles. Many of the officers also carry pistols. A Headquarters vignette with Staff and Standard is included .
The diorama is designed to be placed upon a flat “table” area 12’ x 6’. The architecture is mounted upon a series of seven interlocking tiles with a specially prepared felt underliner offering grass, bushes and sandy soils. The figurines are cast of a pewter alloy in 25mm scale making them approximately one inch tall; and all are hand-painted with shading and highlighting plus a raft of detail. Weapons, tools and flags are affixed to the castings and the Texican are identified upon their metal bases with their unit’s identification. The various leaders are also named. The Mexicans are supplied on Alnico magnetic company unit bases with their respective identifications printed upon a header mounted to the base. Each figurine in turn is affixed to a small metal plate that will attach to its respective company base. The Column Commanders are mounted upon horses with appropriate identifications.
Both figurines and diorama are supplied in cardboard containers designed for this express purpose. DIORAMA: Two 2’ x 2’ x 1’ wide top opening boxes & FIGURINES: Seven 13” x 11¼ “ x 3¼ “deep top locking lid boxes with identifications on top and side. Underlayment folded over to make a roll 3’ long x 9” diameter. ALAMO ADVENTURE interactive game rules and description are included with the package. A narrated tape can be prepared for use as a museum descriptive if the presentation is to be used as a visual display. The artist is also well-known for dramatic readings for groups and as a public speaker on historical subjects having won many awards for his work. A slide show illustrating the presentation is available for viewing.
